Installations! No. 2 – We’re Off and Running

Last weekend I started transporting some of the elements for our Installations! Entry over to Everbank Plaza. Bob and I were going to begin our next level of planning once we had the pieces in the space.

I still had a lot more to do at home, but both Bob and I wanted to get started in “our” space.

I guess it’s time to explain our concept – we’re making a 10’x10’x6’ tall marble race. You probably played with one in your youth, where marbles run down twisting chutes and  make sounds and do some crazy moves. We decided to scale it up. I was working on the towers, the chutes and the wooden ball elevator, while Bob turned 75 1” spheres out of exotic woods and then started working on the wooden chain that would drive the elevator.

Bob was pretty proud of completing the chain, but said he’d never do it again. It turned out to be a heck of a job.

You can see the towers behind Bob. There are 13 of them all together, but I still needed to get the chain from Bob and make the drive gears and handle that would turn the “ball pump” that pushes the balls up the elevator.

I finally got everything working on the elevator this morning. I had to keep redesigning the gears to that everything would work smoothly, but finally everything worked fine.

It’s over 6’ tall and the whole column is filled up with the balls Bob turned. I took over the elevator and the last of the towers to Everbank today and set up everything to begin creating the marble run. We now have the balls leaving the elevator and going to a switcher which lets the balls alternate between the left hand chutes and the right hand chutes.

Tomorrow I’ll start on the some of the longer runs and adding some of our special effects.
